Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. The oral granules should be sprinkled on 1 teaspoon of applesauce or apple juice and given either by mouth or through a nasogastric (NG) tube. Protonix tablets are taken by mouth, with or without food. The oral granules should be taken 30 minutes before a meal. Warnings for people with certain health conditions

Pantoprazole is used to treat certain conditions in which there is too much acid in the stomach. This medicine may also be used to treat Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a condition where the stomach produces too much acid. Both pantoprazole and esomeprazole (Nexium) belong to a group of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).

Other interactions

These risks are highest in people who take high doses of one of these medications or take them for one year or longer. Talk to your doctor about the risks of taking pantoprazole. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about ways to prevent bone loss/fracture, such as by taking calcium (such as calcium citrate) and vitamin D supplements. If you are taking the granules, take your dose 30 minutes before a meal. To take it by mouth, open the packet and mix the granules in applesauce or apple juice. Sprinkle the granules on 1 teaspoon (5 milliliters) of applesauce and swallow all of the mixture right away (within 10 minutes). Or you can mix the granules with 1 teaspoon (5 milliliters) of apple juice in a small cup, stir for 5 seconds, and swallow all of the mixture right away.

For example, OTC antacids may be used with pantoprazole. Gastritis and ulcers are sometimes caused by certain drugs or bacteria. Pantoprazole may be used to treat or help prevent gastritis and ulcers in these situations. The usual dosage of pantoprazole varies, depending on the reason you’re taking the drug. If you have problems with your esophagus or stomach, your doctor may prescribe pantoprazole for you.

Call your doctor right away if you have an allergic reaction to pantoprazole oral tablets. But if you think you’re having a medical emergency, call 911 or your local emergency number. You may have weight gain while you’re taking pantoprazole oral tablets. Both weight gain and weight loss were reported after the drug’s initial studies were done. Pantoprazole may cause side effects, but it does not seem to cause anxiety.
