Morphine Oral: Uses, Side Effects, Interactions, Pictures, Warnings & Dosing

Nausea, vomiting, constipation, lightheadedness, dizziness, drowsiness, or sweating may occur. Some of these side effects may decrease after you have been using this medication for a while. If any of these effects last or get worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about other ways to decrease nausea (such as lying down for 1 to 2 hours with as little head movement as possible).

If you miss a dose of this medicine, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Measure the oral liquid with a marked measuring spoon, oral syringe, or medicine cup. The average household teaspoon may not hold the right amount of liquid. Swallow the extended-release capsules and extended-release tablets whole. It’s essential you always take opioid medications as directed by a doctor, never share them with anyone else, and cease usage (or move to another medication) when possible. If you have had a bad reaction to, or dependency on, opioid medications in the past, inform your doctor.

If too much of this medicine is taken for a long time, it may become habit-forming (causing mental or physical dependence). But when people use opioid drugs for too long, misuse them, or get them illegally, they can pose serious risks. This includes the risk of dependence, addiction, and accidental overdose. Morphine is a Schedule 2 controlled substance under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). This means that morphine has a high potential for abuse but has a currently accepted medical use as a treatment or a currently accepted medical use with severe restrictions.

Natural occurrence

Abuse may lead to severe psychological or physical dependence. Morphine is used primarily to treat both acute and chronic severe pain. Its duration of analgesia is about three to seven hours.1213 Side effects of nausea and constipation are rarely severe enough to warrant stopping treatment. Finally, as an unlikely possibility, acute opioid withdrawal with mood, anxiety, and physical symptoms, could have contributed to some patients receiving the diagnosis of MDD shortly after opioids were discontinued. If you have ongoing pain (such as due to cancer), your doctor may direct you to also take long-acting opioid medications.

Make sure you store the medicine in a safe and secure place to prevent others from getting it. Morphine extended-release capsules or tablets work differently from the regular morphine oral solution or tablets, even at the same dose. Do not switch from one brand or form to the other unless your doctor tells you to. Opioids act on your brain by simulating the effects of endorphins, our naturally occurring pain relievers. But opioid medications can quickly cause drug tolerance and dependency.

Opioid medicine can slow or stop your breathing, and death may occur, especially if you drink alcohol or use other drugs that cause drowsiness or slow breathing. A person caring for you should give naloxone and/or seek emergency medical attention if you have slow breathing with long pauses, blue colored lips, or if you are hard to wake up. Opioid receptor-rich areas include the limbic system, hypothalamus, pituitary, and brainstem.

It is very important that you understand the rules of the Opioid Analgesic REMS program to prevent addiction, abuse, and misuse of morphine. If you have been using this medicine regularly for several weeks or longer, do not change your dose or suddenly stop using it without checking with your doctor. Your doctor may want you to gradually reduce the amount you are using before stopping it completely. This may help prevent worsening of your condition and reduce the possibility of withdrawal symptoms, including stomach cramps, anxiety, fever, nausea, runny nose, sweating, tremors, or trouble sleeping. This medicine will add to the effects of alcohol and other central nervous system (CNS) depressants. CNS depressants are medicines that slow down the nervous system, which may cause drowsiness or make you less alert.

This medicine should not be used to treat pain that you only have once in a while or “as needed”. Chronic opioid use has been shown to increase your risk of depression in the long term. If you’ve been taking opioids for a long time, you might want to talk with a doctor about a depression screening.

Dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting may occur when you get up suddenly from a lying or sitting position. Also, lying down for a while may relieve the dizziness or lightheadedness.
