From ecstasy to molly – what’s in a name when it comes to drug use?
Molly was made illegal in the United States in 1985, at which time it was classified by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) as a Schedule I drug, according to the Controlled Substances Act. Ecstasy was one of several drugs tested in a military context decades after. It was then re-synthesized, first by Gordon Alles, then by Alexander Shulgin, who tested it on himself, his wife, and his friends.
It is hoped that MDMA might make bad memories less vivid, while increasing feelings of safety and trust. Shulgin went on to develop a range of new compounds, with varying effects and risks, including MDMA and PMMA (paramethoxymethamphetamine), many of which ended up as versions of street ecstasy. Reports also suggest that people who use ecstasy exhibit such symptoms as well as other markers of addiction including tolerance, drug cravings, and withdrawal.
Who Uses Ecstasy?
Ecstasy is most popular among younger males, ranging from 18 to 25 years old. In a 2021 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, it was shown that of those 12 years of age and older, almost 2.2 million people used ecstasy in the last 12 months. On a Saturday night last month, 12 students at Wesleyan University in Connecticut were poisoned by “Molly,” a hallucinogenic drug they had taken to enhance a campus party. Ambulances and helicopters transported the stricken to nearby hospitals, some in critical condition. Molly—the street name for the amphetamine MDMA—can cause extremely high fevers, liver failure, muscle breakdown, and cardiac arrest.

Another study by Kirkpatrick’s group looked at the effect of MDMA on oxytocin levels. They believed that MDMA would increase blood levels of oxytocin. Participants took different doses of MDMA and on other occasions, different doses of intranasal oxytocin. As expected, both inhaled oxytocin and MDMA increased blood oxytocin levels in a dose-dependent manner—meaning that the more of each substance ingested, the more oxytocin was found in the blood.
Dealers at all levels can adulterate the drug because it is in powder form, similar to cocaine. Pills carry risks, but are generally only adulterated by the manufacturer. Molly on the other hand can be tampered with at every step between manufacturer and user. Ecstasy overdose symptoms can include faintness, panic attacks or extreme anxiety, high blood pressure, and seizures. When ecstasy use is followed by vigorous physical activity, it can lead to a potentially dangerous rise in body temperature known as hyperthermia.
Users may encounter problems similar to those experienced by amphetamine and cocaine users, including addiction. Research has shown that animals will self-administer MDMA, an indicator of a drug’s abuse potential. Users may take several tablets at once or in succession over a period of time. Abusers may also use in conjunction with other psychoactive drugs like LSD. As with many other “party drugs”, ecstasy is rarely used alone and it is frequently combined with alcohol and marijuana. These stimulants increase levels of dopamine, a brain chemical that can create feelings of euphoria.
